Heartworm is a parasitic roundworm that infects a dog’s heart and if left untreated can cause the death of your dog. If your dog is diagnosed with heartworm disease, he will have to undergo routine treatment to get rid of the parasites. While the treatment for canine heartworms is generally very effective, consult with a trained veterinarian before administering any kind of medication. Your dog should have a thorough, regular checkups during the course of the treatment to ensure a healthy progression.
Things You'll Need

- Leash
Instructions
Treat your dog with a steroid, such as Prednisone, to treat any inflammation he is experiencing. The administration of the drug will vary, depending on what your veterinarian prescribes.
Inject heartworm medicine in your dog exactly as your veterinarian instructs. This will mean injecting deep into the muscles of your dog's back. If you are not capable of administering the injection yourself, take your dog to your vet for the injections.
Keep your dog on a leash, and don't let him exert himself from the time he receives his first dose of heartworm injection until at least one month after the second dose.
Check your dog’s temperature every morning to make sure she is not developing a fever. Temperatures below 102 degrees Fahrenheit are considered normal.
Slowly reintroduce your dog to exercise and physical activities after the first two months of treatment.
