Taking your dog to the veterinarian because of its allergies can become expensive and tedious. Unfortunately, many dogs need to see the vet multiple times a year for the same allergy issues. Because of the high cost and inconvenience of traveling to the veterinarian’s office, many owners are seeking over-the-counter cures to alleviate their dogs’ allergy symptoms. Fortunately, there are a few products available to help your pooch, which are not only effective, but relatively cheap, as well.

Antihistamines
-
Believe it or not, many antihistamines that veterinarians prescribe are formulated for humans. In addition, some of these antihistamines are available over the counter. For instance, the Dog Owner’s Guide website states that antihistamines containing the ingredients diphenhydramine or hydroxyzine are effective in treating a dog’s allergy symptoms. Consult with your veterinarian for dosage information, however, because it is different than it is for humans and depends upon the dog’s weight.
Shampoos
-
If you dog is experiencing skin issues as a result of its allergies, soothing shampoos may calm the irritation. The VetInfo website states that mild shampoos can often soothe the dog’s skin, particularly if the inflammation is caused by environmental factors, such as pollen and dust mites. Oatmeal shampoos often work well, in addition to conditioners and moisturizing sprays. Follow the directions on the product’s label for soak times and frequency of use. Avoid any products that contain perfumes, as they may further irritate the skin.
Fatty Acid Supplements
-
Fatty acid supplements are often helpful in reducing inflammation and restoring essential oils to a dog’s skin. Useful fatty acids can be found in cod liver and flax seed oil. The VetInfo website recommends placing a tablespoon of either oil in the dog’s food once a day to help relieve the allergy symptoms. You can also purchase the fatty acid supplements in gel caps over the counter at most pet stores. Follow the directions on the label for dosage instructions.
Aloe Vera Gel
-
If your dog is suffering from extremely irritated skin and is uncomfortable as a result, give aloe vera a try. Available in a gel formulation, this natural product has been used for centuries as a way to relieve painful skin irritations. Apply this product to any red spots or areas on the dog’s skin that are caused by allergies. Prevent the dog from licking the areas, as the aloe vera will not get a chance to work if the dog removes it. Use the aloe vera as often as necessary.
