An infection in a dog's eye leads to the inflammation of the mucous membranes, as well as the soft tissues surrounding the eye. This causes the eye to look severely bloodshot or irritated. The condition is commonly referred to as "pink eye" because of the pink color of the irritated eye.
Causes

Eye infections in dogs occur several ways, the most common being bacterial infections. Humans, who are carrying the disease, contact with other animals and even flying insects transmit this type of infection through contact. Viral infections are also spread via contact, however; this type of infection is airborne as well. An allergic reaction to foods or airborne allergens can cause inflammation to the mucus membranes that surround the eye, causing an infection. Other causes of eye infection in a dog are trauma, low tear production and foreign substances, such as a splinter.

According to Natural Dog Health Remedies, an herbal eyewash is a safe and effective way to treat an eye infection in a dog. Add 10 drops of either eyebright, calendula, chamomile, red clover, or St. John's wort, non-alcohol based tincture to a quarter tsp. of salt and one cup of filtered or distilled water to create an herbal eyewash. Use an eyedropper or pipette to rinse the infected eye 2 to 3 times a day. These tinctures help to reduce the inflammation and irritation of an eye infection, enabling the eye to heal appropriately.
Homeopathic Remedies

Vitamins C and E supplements will help reduce inflammation and promote healing. At five to 10 mg per pound, use vitamin C, two to three times a day and vitamin E once daily. Vitamin A stimulates corneal healing. High levels of vitamin A is found in cod liver oil; apply one drop directly in the eye daily until the infection subsides.
