How to Identify a Dog With a Metal ID Tag Number

Owning a dog is both a joy and a very big responsibility. Dog owners need to maintain the dog's health and happiness, keep it safe and deal with any emergency situations. One way to keep a dog safe is to make sure that it's always identifiable, in case it gets lost. Chips and physical ID tags are important forms of dog ID. If you've found a lost dog, look for its metal ID tag and take some steps to get it home to its worried owner.

Check to see whether the ID tag includes a name and phone number as well as the dog's ID number. Some tags have a phone number on one side and the ID number on the other. If there's a phone number, expedite the process by calling the owners directly.

Call your city Humane Society or Animal Control office if there is no phone number on the tag. Give them the dog's ID number and ask them to look up the dog's information. Every identification number is tracked through a central database, which includes the owner's name, phone number and address.

Call the owner and talk to them or leave a message, instead of just showing up at their door. Leave word with the Humane Society that you have this dog. Chances are good that the owner will contact the Humane Society as part of their search if you're unable to reach them.
