Side Effects of Pet Vaccines

Pet vaccinations are necessary for a variety of conditions, including rabies, parvovirus or leptospirosis. These vaccines help your pet fight off life threatening infections and diseases by stimulating the immune system. Most dogs have either no reaction or only a slight reaction to vaccinations. However, some may experience a severe adversity to the vaccines.

  1. Anaphylaxis

    • Anaphylaxis is a rare reaction to vaccinations, but can prove deadly. Occurring minutes after the administered vaccine or up to 24 hours later, pets can exhibit sudden diarrhea, shock, coma and possibly death. If possible, give the pet epinephrine within minutes. If left untreated, anaphylaxis can lead to death.

    Neurological Problems

    • Some vaccines cause neurological problems. The canine distemper vaccine, for example, is a known cause of brain swelling. Additionally, the measles vaccine, commonly given to puppies, can cause nervous system damage. Depending on the amount of damage, your veterinarian can prescribe the proper treatment.

    Urticaria

    • Urticaria is a skin reaction to vaccination that can cause hives, along with redness and swelling around the mouth, eyes and neck. Urticaria is extremely itchy and can lead to anaphylaxis. This reaction normally happens within a day after the vaccination. Antihistamines or corticosteroids prescribed by a veterinarian can control the symptoms.

    Fever

    • Some animals may run a mild fever for a few days after the vaccination. Lack of appetite and a decrease in activity accompanies the fever. The pet usually returns to normal within a couple days, but see your veterinarian if conditions don't improve.
