For many pet owners, their dogs are members of the family. Maintaining their health is a priority, so when pet owners notice their dogs are not acting like their normal selves, it can be very worrisome. Although colon tumors are not as common as other types of cancers in dogs, there are certain signs and symptoms to watch for, which then need to be communicated to the pet's veterinarian.

Changes in bowels

Diarrhea could be a symptom that your dog ate something that did not agree with him. However, diarrhea and vomiting also are signs of colon tumors in dogs. This may lead to a lack of eating and drinking, which can cause dehydration and eventually constipation. Blood also may be visible in the dog's stool. If pressing on the dog's abdomen causes pain, a sign of colon cancer, take your dog to your veterinarian as soon as possible.
Changes in personality
-
Different dogs have different energy levels, but if your dog begins to show a decrease in energy and becomes lethargic, it may be cause for concern. Other changes in personality are signs of colon cancer in dogs. If your dog seems depressed, irritable or simply does not seem to care, these could be signs of a health condition such as colon tumors.
Changes on the skin
-
Hair loss, rashes and warm skin associated with a fever also are signs of colon tumors. The average temperature of a dog is around 101 degrees Fahrenheit, though it can vary by dog. A veterinarian will take the dog's temperature rectally and be able to tell you whether your dog's temperature is high.
Changes found during examination
-
Certain signs of colon tumors are better investigated by a veterinarian. If your dog experiences any of the above signs, take your dog immediately to a vet. There, the vet likely will palpate the abdominal area of the dog and check for any masses that may be felt by touch. Veterinarians also may give your dog an ultrasound and rectal examination. If any masses are found, the veterinarian may take a sample of the mass, called a biopsy. The biopsy will reveal if in fact that mass is cancerous.
