Human Remedies for Dog Coughing

A canine cough is troublesome for pet owners. It can be difficult to see your beloved pet suffer from an irritating cough. There are several reasons why a dog develops a cough. Your dog might have breathed an allergen into its respiratory system. Other causes might include more serious conditions such as pneumonia or the highly contagious "kennel cough," which is the result of various viral and bacterial infections.

Some forms of canine cough can be dangerous and even put your dog's life in jeopardy. A trip to the vet to properly diagnose the cough is a good idea. There are also several human remedies for dog coughing.

  1. Dextromethorphan-Based Syrups

    • The active ingredient in human cough syrup, which is just as effective for dogs, is called dextromethorphan. These types of cough syrup are available in most pharmacies and are inexpensive. Read the labels of available cough syrups to make sure that the active ingredient listed is dextromethorphan. Check with your veterinarian first to ensure the proper dosage and acquire any other advice.

    Herbal Cough Syrups

    • Herbal-based cough syrups are used by humans, but also can alleviate your dog's cough. Some of the most helpful syrups include ingredients such as oregano oil, echinacea oil and goldenseal oil. Some dogs will readily consume herbal cough syrups while others might need a little coaxing due to the bitter taste.

    Honey

    • A tablespoon of honey can be just the trick to sooth your dog's irritated throat. The honey will coat your dog's throat and force allergens that might have accumulated down into his stomach. The honey should be warmed slightly so that it will easily slide down your dog's throat. It can be given every three to five hours. If the source of the cough is irritation, the symptoms should improve within 24 hours.

    Peppermint Sugar Syrup

    • A homemade cough remedy that can help ease the cough symptoms for your dog can be made right in your own kitchen. Combine equal parts sugar and hot water in a small bowl. Mix until the sugar dissolves and allow for cooling. Add 2 drops of peppermint essential oil. The homemade syrup can be given every four hours until the symptoms of the cough subside.
