If you own a dog, then there is a good chance that you will have to deal with a canine bacterial infection at some point. There are numerous bacterial infections that affect dogs, from minor urinary tract infections to major infections such as staph infections on the skin. Veterinary treatment is recommended for any canine bacterial infection and may include the use of antibacterial medication.

Amoxicillin
-
Amoxicillin is a popular prescription medication used in humans and animals. For dogs, it is most commonly known as Clavamox, which is available in both liquid and tablet form. This medication is related to penicillin, and eliminates bacterial infections by preventing bacteria from growing protective cell walls. Amoxicillin is commonly used for infections of the skin, treatment of wounds, dental infections and urinary tract infections.
Cephalexin
-
This medication, known by the brand name Keflex, is also related to penicillin but kills a broader spectrum of bacteria than the penicillin-type drugs. Like amoxicillin drugs, this medication also prevents the formation of bacterial cell walls. While Keflex is most commonly used in humans, it has been approved for use in dogs as well. This prescription medication is used for the same infections as amoxicillin, along with pneumonia and bone infections.
Marbofloxacin
-
Also known as Zeniquin, this medication inhibits bacterial enzymes, which in turn kills the bacteria. This is a heavy-duty prescription drug most often reserved for serious bacterial infections. Zeniquin may produce some harsh side effects in the dogs that take it, including allergies to the drug, joint problems in young animals, gastrointestinal problems or negative reactions with other drugs the dog may be taking.
