Homeopathic Remedies for Mange in Dogs

Parasites, or mites, are the culprits behind mange and the discomfort it causes for dogs. Mites can be even more destructive than fleas because they burrow their way into the depths of the dog's skin to drink its blood. Dogs will then suffer from the objectionable side effects caused by the allergens the mites create for them. Fortunately, effective homeopathic avenues are available to remedy mange in dogs.

  1. Symptoms

    • Certain signs and symptoms may signal that your dog has been afflicted with mange. These include weight loss, extreme scratching, lack of an appetite, hair loss and dehydration. Typically, you will notice the effects on the head, neck, face and ears. There may be crustiness around the ears, neck and head. There could alseo be discharge from the ears. Brown spots may appear near the nose area. The dog's coat may start to shed and skin irritation is evident by the pink or red coloration.

    Topical Treatments

    • Topical treatments that can be beneficial for mange include honey, which can be rubbed over the dog's skin. It's important, however, to wipe it off at night because it can attract ants. Two tablespoons of yogurt can be applied to the dog's ears to help ease the crust residue and discharge. Hydrogen peroxide (1 percent) and borax can be mixed together with water. Be certain that it is mixed thoroughly before the application to the dog's skin and hair. Do not wipe it off because it needs to be able to soak into the skin for effectiveness. This can be applied weekly for up to 2 months, if necessary. Cooking oil rubbed on the skin can be beneficial in helping to ease the inflammation.

    Supplements and Vitamins

    • A wide variety of effective supplements and vitamins are useful in easing the itchiness and irritated skin of mange. Vitamin C can be given up to three times per day whereas vitamin E can be given once a day. Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which also aid in reducing itchiness. These fatty acids are also found in pumpkin seeds and flaxseed oil. Beneficial herbs that contain effective agents to help in the healing process. Yarrow products are enablers in healing the wounds caused by the excessive scratching, along with controlling the bleeding from the sore areas. Mites have an aversion to garlic, so it is a good agent in helping to deter them. It can also be rubbed on the wounds. It has an antibacterial aspect, so it is an aid in treating the bacteria in the infection. Lavender and neem oil combined together can be used as a rinsing agent for fighting mange.
