When you have a new puppy, it can sometimes be tricky to figure out a proper diet for it. You may go through several different trial-and-error diets before you find one that keeps your puppy happy and regular. Constipation is not unusual in puppies because they are prone to chewing on and eating things that they shouldn't be eating. It is important to watch for signs of constipation in your puppy so that you can assist it if needed.

Straining
-
If you think your puppy might be constipated, pay attention to it when it uses the bathroom. If it seems to be straining and having difficulty, constipation may be the reason.
Hard Droppings
-
Puppies who are constipated may only be able to produce small droppings at unusual intervals. These droppings will be hard and dry and much smaller than the normal size. Puppy droppings are normally soft, so if they are hard, this typically indicates a problem.
Rounded Tummy
-
A common symptom of constipation in puppies is a rounded tummy. This is due to buildup of gas and fecal matter. Puppies can have a round tummy for reasons other than constipation, so you will have to consider other factors to know for sure.
Inability to Defecate
-
In some cases, your puppy may not be going to the bathroom at all. If you are not noticing any droppings in the yard, the puppy is probably constipated. Sometimes constipation will resolve itself naturally, but if your puppy has not pooped in two or more days, you may want to seek veterinary advice.
