Shih tzus suffer from a variety of breed-specific health issues. One of those issues is dry skin. The itching, flaking and redness can be from a number of different causes. A veterinarian can determine what is causing your dog to suffer from dry skin and can recommend a method of treatment.

Staphylococci
-
According to the American Shih Tzu club, dry skin can be caused by staphylococci, or the staph bacteria, which results in a disease called pyoderma. This disease can cause your dog's skin to become dry and itchy, and it can eventually result in ulcers and hair loss if left untreated. The condition can be treated by a veterinarian who will run tests to determine what antibiotic will be the most effective.
Hypothyroidism
-
An imbalance in a dog's hormones such as hypothyroidism can cause dry skin, hair loss, changes in weight and a lack of energy. Spayed females are more likely than males to suffer from this disorder. A veterinarian can diagnose the disease by performing a blood test that checks the dog's hormone levels. Hypothyroidism can be treated with daily doses of a synthetic thyroid supplement. Your shih tzu will need to continue to use the hormone supplements throughout her life, according to Pet Education.
Seborrhea
-
The Pet Education website indicates that a disorder called seborrhea can cause dry skin, itching and hair loss. This disease can be inherited from the dog's parents, or it can result as a cause of allergies or hypothyroidism. The disorder can be treated by using specially formulated shampoos or by finding and treating the allergy or thyroid imbalance.
Sebaceous Adenitis
-
The Shih Tzu Reporter lists a disease called sebaceous adenitis as a disease of the skin that can affect shih tzus. It is a genetic abnormality that is passed from parents to their offspring. This disorder causes dry skin, dandruff, scaling and odor. The disease can lead to secondary skin infections if left untreated. Sebaceous adenitis cannot be cured, but it can be treated by bathing the dog frequently and by using oil to lubricate the dry skin.
Cold Weather
-
Cold weather can cause dry skin in shih tzus and other breeds. According to an article by the American Animal Hospital Association that was featured on The Weather Channel, during winter it is advisable to only bathe the dog as much as necessary and to use a shampoo that is formulated for dogs rather than humans. Regular brushing is important as well.
Allergies
-
The American Shih Tzu Club indicates that allergies to fleas, dust, mold and other environmental factors can cause dryness, redness or itchy skin in dogs. A veterinarian can perform an allergy test on your dog to determine what is causing her skin to itch or dry out and can recommend a method of treatment, such as an antihistamine, that will control her allergy symptoms.
