Signs to Tell If Your Dog Is Pregnant

Just like humans, dogs will show specific signs that are indicative of pregnancy. Although these signs are often helpful when determining if your pooch is pregnant, only a veterinarian can definitively determine if the dog is indeed pregnant. If you suspect your dog is expecting, take her to a vet immediately so that proper care can begin.

  1. Change in Nipples

    • According to Doctors Foster and Smith, one of the first signs of dog pregnancies is a change in the nipples. About 14 to 15 days after conception occurs, the dog's nipples typically become larger and turn a darker color. When the dog is about 20 days pregnant, the fur around the nipples will begin to thin out to give the puppies easier access for feeding.

    Decreased Appetite

    • According to doggies.com, just like with most expecting human mothers-to-be, pregnant dogs can also experience morning sickness. Instead of vomiting, however, most dogs will experience a decrease in their appetites 21 to 28 days into the pregnancy. The dog may refuse to eat all together or simply eat less than usual. Although this is typically normal during the early stages of pregnancy, contact your veterinarian if you are concerned.

    Vaginal Discharge

    • According to the Doctors Foster and Smith website, pregnant dogs will often experience a clear, mucoid vaginal discharge. This discharge is commonly discovered when the dog is about four to five weeks into its pregnancy and often continues until the puppies are born. Bloody or dark discharge could be a sign of pregnancy complications. If seen, contact your vet immediately.

    Change in Abdomen Size

    • As the puppies grow, so will your dog's stomach. When your dog is about one month pregnant, her stomach will begin to expand, if it hasn't already. It is possible to feel the walnut-sized embryos at this point as well. At about six weeks into the pregnancy, you will likely see and feel the puppies moving and kicking. The abdomen will also feel hard, large and stretched.

    Anxiety

    • As your dog's pregnancy comes to an end, she may experience anxiety. Dogs are typically pregnant about 63 days and often display abnormal behavior as their due date approaches. She may start pacing, become extremely needy, excessively groom herself or spend time in a private area. When your mother-to-be starts displaying this type of behavior, prepare for the arrival of her puppies.
