Natural Treatments for Hot Spots for Dogs

Hot spots are painful sores that develop on dogs that start as a tiny scratch or sore and from irritation can develop into a patch several inches in size within a short period of time. For this reason it is important to treat the hot spot as quickly as possible. Since it is not always an option to go the veterinarian right away, you can try some home remedies which may be effective at healing your dog. That being said, these methods have not been prescribed by a vet and it is best to consult your vet before trying any remedy for your pet.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

    • Naturalists have used apple cider vinegar for years to cure various skin and internal problems. In its unpasteurized and organic form, apple cider vinegar contains enzymes that may promote the body's natural healing process. The most recommended cure on the Earth Clinic website, apple cider vinegar should be mixed in a 1:1 ratio with water into a spray bottle before spraying it onto the hot spot area. The mixture may sting your dog a bit at first, but it will prevent him from scratching it again and after a few days it should begin to heal.

    Aloe Vera

    • Aloe vera is a tropical plant often used for healing in humans and animals. In humans, it is frequently used to soothe and heal sunburns and other skin maladies. In dogs it can begin to reduce inflammation caused by trivial burns, lick granulomas and skin inflammation, as well as hot spots. The gel from the leaf of a plant can be applied directly to the skin. The plant has antibacterial properties and will keep your dog from scratching and licking the area because of its astringent flavor.

    Oatmeal

    • Another treatment that works well with both humans and animals is oatmeal. Preparing an oatmeal bath can promote healing on conditions like chicken pox in humans and with hot spots in dogs. Begin by wetting down your dog with some cool water and then apply a mixture of the oatmeal bath with 2 cups of water and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Afterward, rinse the bath off with cool water. The oatmeal will soothe the itching and painful feeling of the hot spot. The oatmeal works as a good first step to other courses of treatment.

    Vegetable Oil

    • This treatment may be the most beneficial because it keeps the dog from touching its wound. Applying vegetable oil to your dog's hot spot with a brush gives your dog a foul taste when it attempts to chew on its hot spot. Also, the oil can kill mites and other insects that may be the cause. The oil aids the natural healing process and the spot will go away after a week or so. Adding six drops of iodine to a cup of vegetable oil will help to stave off infection.
