Ivermectin is used to treat many different types of dog-related illnesses, yet it's most commonly used to treat demodectic mange in dogs. According to Scott Long, professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, demodectic mange most often affects dogs, especially young dogs, although cats may also be infected. Demodectic mange is caused by skin mites and is not contagious to humans or other animals. Learning how to treat your mange-infested puppy with Ivermectin is essential if you want your dog to stay as healthy as possible.
Things You'll Need
- Ivermectin
- Needle
- Hotdog
Instructions
Weigh your dog. Puppies should receive 0.1 cc of Ivermectin for every 10 pounds of body weight. The amount of Ivermectin you give your puppy is determined by the dog's total weight. For example, a puppy weighing 20 pounds would receive 0.2 cc of Ivermectin.
Use the needle to extract the correct dose of ivermectin and insert it into a hotdog (or part of a hotdog, depending on the size of your puppy). Since Ivermectin has a strong taste, use a hotdog to mask it. Give the hotdog to your puppy without spilling or leaking any of the Ivermectin fluid. Ivermectin and needles can be purchased at agricultural stores and from veterinarian offices.
Repeat the Ivermectin treatment on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Talk with your veterinarian about the severity of your puppy's mange to determine how often you should treat your puppy with Ivermectin and how long to continue treatment.
