Respiratory or inhalant allergies in dogs are referred to as atopy. Unlike typical human allergy symptoms, dogs tend to present with itchy, red or runny eyes, itching that causes them to scratch around their muzzle, feet or stomach and in rare cases sneezing can occur. Atopy includes seasonal and persistent allergies. Any allergy type symptoms should be addressed with your veterinary to ensure proper treatment and to rule out other medical conditions.

Red, Itchy or Runny Eyes
-
Changes in your dog's eyes that include redness in the whites of the eyes, itching signified by rubbing the eyes or scratching at them, or eye drainage that presents when pollens or other allergens are present can be considered as an allergic reaction. If symptoms persist for more than a few days or worsen, consult your veterinarian to determine the cause. Mild seasonal allergies are easily treatable with antihistamines.
Rubbing of the Face and Muzzle
-
Inhalant allergies in dogs often present by causing itching on the face or muzzle. Your dog my rub their face on grass or indoor surfaces such as carpets or bedding or may use their paws to scratch an itchy muzzle. Any pale skin on the dog's face may appear to be slightly pinker than normal at times bordering on redness. This can be due to the allergic reaction or to the rubbing. Dogs may abrade the skin if the itching is not controlled.
Itching of Feet and Stomach
-
Inhalant allergies cause dogs to itch systemically. Since the dogs can come into contact with the allergen when they walk or lie down, at times both the feet and stomach can itch. As with the face and muzzle, redness can occur and the skin may abrade due to the dog chewing to relieve the itch. If you notice any type of raised bumps, hives or a rash, consult your veterinarian to determine the exact cause.
Sneezing or Runny Nose
-
On rare occasions, dogs will sneeze or have clear nasal discharge due to allergies. Since a dog's symptoms do not present as those of human hay fever type allergies, if any type of drainage or severe sneezing occurs, your veterinarian should be consulted to rule out respiratory illnesses or diseases.
