A chihuahua is more than just a celebrity fashion statement. They are highly intelligent dogs that bond well with the humans in their lives and do not require as much exercise as a larger breed of dog. This makes them ideal for life in an apartment. They are territorial and protective despite their diminutive stature and do well with calm children. Chihuahuas are sensitive to cold and heat and should not be left outdoors without supervision.
Things You'll Need
- Dry food
- Dog shampoo
- Water
- Cotton balls
- Nail clippers
Instructions
Feed a chihuahua a small amount of dry dog food three times a day. Feeding once a day will not maintain proper blood-sugar levels in this breed. Give treats only occasionally since a chihuahua will gain weight quickly. Make clean water available at all times.
Bathe your chihuahua monthly with a mild dog soap and warm water. Avoid getting water in the ears.
Clean a chihuahua's ears twice a month with a cotton ball soaked in warm water. Do not enter the ear canal; clean only the outer section of the inner ear.
Clip the chihuahua's nails when they become too long. Cut carefully just below the curve of the nail with nail clippers specifically made for dogs.
Provide toys for your chihuahua and spend time playing with him each day. Chihuahuas love attention so provide ample opportunity for cuddling and petting.
