The Adverse Effects of Frontline Plus Flea Medication

Frontline Plus is a topical medication that kills fleas and ticks on your dog. It is one of the most popular remedies for flea infestation because it is a once-a-month application and produces good results. However, some dogs may suffer side effects from the medication. If the side effects are severe enough, you may need to try another topical ointment or flea eradication method.

  1. Irritation

    • Because Frontline Plus is a topical ointment, to be placed onto the dog's skin between his shoulder blades, it could cause skin irritation at the site of application. Skin irritation is rare, and in most cases has been temporary.

    Interactions

    • Frontline Plus can interact with other medications your dog is taking. Be sure to speak with your veterinarian before applying Frontline Plus if your dog is on medication.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Some dogs are allergic to fipronil, which is the medication in Frontline Plus, and can have an allergic reaction. Allergic reaction symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea and hair loss.

    Dangerous if Swallowed

    • Frontline Plus should always be applied on the back of your dog's neck or between his shoulder blades. Placing the medication there means your dog can't reach the area to lick it and he also won't be able to get it on his paws, which he could then lick. Frontline Plus is poisonous if ingested.
