Bathe with oatmeal shampoo. The oatmeal is soothing to the skin. Make sure to use cool or lukewarm water because hot water can irritate the skin. Leave the shampoo on for about 10 minutes and rinse. Oatmeal shampoo can be found at any pet supply store or online.
Give fish/flax oil supplements to your dog. These supplements contain Omega-3, which helps with inflammation. There are products made just for dogs and can be bought at any local pet supply store or online. Follow the dosing on the package.
Talk with your vet about prescription or non-prescription antihistamines. Benadryl is a common over-the-counter product and can be bought at any drug store. They calm allergic reactions in the body.
Try eliminating different foods for two weeks. Some of the most common foods dogs are allergic to are corn, wheat, dairy products, pork, turkey and chicken. Eliminate one for two weeks and see if symptoms subside. Keep trying each one until you find the culprit.
Look for environmental causes for scratching. Consider medications your dog may be taking, flea products, carpet powders, pest control products, lawn care products and shampoos you use on your pet.
