Dogs can develop dry, itchy skin for a number of reasons. Sometimes it is the result of an allergic reaction. Other times it is due to hot spots or eczema. Regardless of the reason for the itching, you can help your pet find relief by treating the itch. Although you could try commercial treatments from the pet store or prescribed medications from your vet, using herbal remedies are safe and inexpensive remedies you can make at home.

Calendula
-
Calendulas, commonly known as marigolds, have been used as medicinal plants for nearly 900 years, according to the University of Maryland. Because the plant contains an antioxidant that helps encourage restorative healing in the body, it is often used to treat inflammation as well as used for its antibacterial properties. Calendula flowers can be boiled in water and then cooled. The resulting liquid can be poured over your dog three times a day to help treat the itchy skin.
Sage
-
According to Herbs 2000, sage is not only versatile in cooking, but is also an effective herb for providing instant relief from excessive itching. Sage can be combined and steeped with water, thyme and Epsom salts. If left overnight to steep, the mixture can be added to your regular pet shampoo. The herbs and the Epsom salts will help relieve the itching your dog is experiencing.
Chamomile Tea
-
The tops of the chamomile flower are often used to create tea, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. When taken internally, chamomile can help treat anxiety and stomach problems. Topically, it is often used to treat skin conditions, such as itching and inflammation. Chamomile and green tea can be combined with baby shampoo, lemon juice, vitamin E, stale beer and glycerine to create a soothing shampoo. You can also mix in other herbs to help boost the effectiveness of the shampoo. Lavender will help heal the skin, rosemary will help deter fleas if they are the cause of the itching and lemongrass can also help deter fleas and control yeast growth, another common skin irritant. Or if you need a quicker relief, you can soak a tea bag for a few minutes and place it directly on the irritated skin.
