Pain Meds for Arthritis in Dogs

Arthritis is a common condition for dogs, and it affects older dogs much more than young dogs. While age is the biggest risk factor for arthritis, it also can be caused by injuries, improper nutrition, injuries or obesity. Your dog might need to see a veterinarian for treatment for arthritis if it is unusually lazy, seems to have pain in its legs, loses its appetite or has diminished muscle tone. There are several pain relievers that can help your dog deal with its arthritis. Talk to your veterinarian about which one is best for your dog and about the proper dosage.

  1. Aspirin

    • Aspirin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and is good for arthritis relief in dogs. While aspirin is an over-the-counter drug, it's important to let your veterinarian know your dog is taking it, especially if you are giving it any other drugs. Some drugs can have dangerous interactions when combined. Dogs should receive 10 mg of aspirin per pound of body weight every 12 hours, according to Vetinfo.com.

    Etodolac

    • Etodolac is a prescription non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is sold as brand names Lodine or Etogesic. It is a good pain reliever for long-term conditions, such as arthritis. However, this drug can have a side effect when used for long periods of time. It can cause tear production to decrease, which can cause severe pain. Watch your dog for signs of eye discomfort. Talk to your vet about proper dosage.

    Deracoxib

    • Deracoxib is a prescription NSAID sold as Deramaxx. This is the most potent NSAID pain reliever, although its results vary from dog to dog, according to Vetinfo.com. Sudden, severe gastrointestinal bleeding caused by Deracoxib has been reported. Talk to your veterinarian about proper dosage.

    Corticosteroid

    • Corticosteroids aren't always considered pain relievers, but they can be used as such in arthritic dogs. They are the most powerful anti-inflammatory medications on the market. Since inflammation causes the dog's arthritic pain, these can be quite beneficial. Some brand names of corticosteroids are Betasone or Azium.
