The Symptoms of Canine Red Eye

Canine red eye, or dog conjunctivitis, is one of the most common dog eye infections. It is an inflammation of the tissue lining the eyeball and eyelids. Symptoms of canine red eye do not cause a change in vision and usually last a few days to a week.

  1. Inflammation

    • Inflammation can be due to excess blood in the eyelids or the eye's blood vessels.

    Redness

    • Redness is caused from irritation and an increase in blood vessels within the eye tissue.

    Discharge

    • Discharge from the eye can be watery and clear, or thick like mucous. The cause is bacteria, allergies or infection. The discharge may cause the eyelids to stick together.

    Squinting

    • Squinting is a reaction to the irritation, causing the dog to paw or rub the eye.
