If your dog suffers from frequent flatulence, or "farting," it probably effects everybody in your household. Certain breeds, like the bulldog and the boxer, are more prone to this problem than others, but any dog can acquire a flatulence problem. Dog flatulence comes as a result of insufficient digestion. If you want to reduce or even eliminate the foul-smelling habit, you will need to adjust some of your dog's eating and exercise routines.
Things You'll Need
- Digestive enzymes for dogs
- Meat-based dog food
Instructions
Feed your dog three or four small meals each day, as opposed to one or two larger meals. Frequent feeding will aid the digestion process and reduce flatulence.
Find a secure, comfortable place where you can feed the dog. If you feed her near other dogs or in an area with a lot of excitement, like a busy kitchen, this will encourage her to eat more quickly. Fast eating is a leading cause of flatulence in dogs, according to Canada's Pet Information Center.
Change your dog food. In many cases you can eliminate flatulence simply by choosing a more digestible dog food. Meat-based foods have the highest digestibility for dogs, while vegetable-based foods are less digestible, according to the Pet Nutrition Info website.
Add digestive enzymes to your dog's food. You can find these products in most pet supply stores.
Avoid giving your dog table scraps. Dogs will have a difficult time digesting much of the food commonly found on the average dinner table, which ultimately means more flatulence.
Give your dog plenty of exercise. Take him for regular walks, play with him in the yard or just make sure to give him an outlet for his energy each day. This will help him to burn calories and reduce flatulence.
