Chihuahuas & Itchy Skin

Itchy skin is a problem that is among the most commonly seen by veterinarians. It can be serious because dogs can cause serious injuries in their quest to stop the itch. Despite the fact that Chihuahuas are a heartier breed than many others, they still can have problems with itchy skin. Depending on the cause of the itching, there are different paths to diagnosis and treatment.

  1. Types of Causes

    • Dry skin, parasites and allergies are among the most common causes of itching in all dogs.

If your chihuahua is itchy, there are quite a few possible causes. They tend to fall into several categories, though. Parasites (like fleas) are one of the most common. Fungal infestations can produce itchy skin. Dry skin can be another cause. Allergies are commonly at fault for itching in dogs. Some immune disorders (pemphigus, for instance) could be to blame. Cancer can also cause dogs to be itchy.

    Parasites

    • It's not a good idea to treat for fleas or other parasites until that's proven to be the problem. The types of treatments on the market can be bad for a dog (particularly if there is no infestation). Smaller dogs like chihuahuas are more likely to suffer ill effects. In addition, if the problem is fleas, you will need to treat the dog's home, too or a re-infestation will be likely. For those reasons, take your dog to the veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment.

    Allergies

    • Itchy feet indicates an environmental allergy, while full body itch is likely to be food related.

Rather than suffering from sneezing from allergies, dogs become itchy. Which parts of your chihuahua itch can indicate the cause of the itching. If the itching is mostly confined to the feet, it's likely to be an environmental allergy (like pollen). If it's widespread a food allergy is more likely. Antihistamines (like Benadryl) can be used in the short term to alleviate symptoms, but you will want to check with your veterinarian for the correct dosage.

    Help From the Veterinarian's Office

    • Just like humans can get allergy screenings, dogs can, too. The veterinarian can take a blood sample to run for allergic triggers. Once those are found, your chihuahua can get shots just like a human and you can know what things to try to eliminate from diet and the environment. If your dog has other diseases, the best way to get those diagnosed (and treated) is with a visit to the vet.

    Home Remedies

    • There are home remedies you can use for your chihuahua. If the problem is dry skin some fish oil added to the diet can help. Check with your vet for the correct dosage. Avoid too many baths as they can dry out the skin, but cool water (with no soap) can help relieve itching. There are also oatmeal treatments available that can be rubbed into your dog's coat to help with itching.
