How to Put Ear Drops in Small Dogs

Ear drops in dogs most often are used to treat infections, get rid of mites or clean the ear canal. As the name suggests, the liquid medication goes directly into the ears of the dog. Putting ear drops in a dog's ear may be difficult due to their tendency to wriggle around when held down. With the proper knowledge, you can make the process painless for both you and the dog.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper towel
  • Dog treats

Instructions

    • 1

Kneel down on the floor and put the dog between your legs to secure him in place. Your legs should grip the dog just tight enough that he can't escape.

    • 2

Tilt the dog's head sideways and lift up an ear with one hand. The ear canal should be easily visible to you at this point.

    • 3

Hold the dropper about an inch above the dog's ear. Drop the recommended amount of liquid directly into the canal.

    • 4

Massage the dog's ear to work the medicine into the ear canal.

    • 5

Wipe any excess liquid off of the dog's head with a paper towel and repeat the process on the other ear if necessary.

    • 6

Give the dog a treat as a reward.
