Nystatin Cream for Dogs

Dogs scratch at their skin and ears when they itch, but that small itch can quickly become inflamed when there is a much more serious condition such as fungus. If a dog is diagnosed with a fungal infection of any kind the veterinarian will more than likely prescribe an antifungal cream such as Nystatin.

  1. How It Works

    • Nystatin must be prescribed by a licensed veterinarian. Nystatin treats and kills infection caused by the fungus, Candida albicans. It destroys the fungus by corrupting the cell membrane of the micro-organism. Apply Nystatin cream to the dog's skin two to three times a day for seven days or as indicated by the vet. Finish the entire prescription even if the dog is feeling better or is showing signs of the fungus disappearing. This is to prevent relapse and the infection returning.

    The Facts

    • Nystatin is a generic name for an ingredient in the brands Panalog, Animax, Derma 4, Dermagen, Dermalone and Derma-Vet. These brands not only include the antifungal Nystatin but an antibiotic, Thiostrepton and/or Neomycin, and a corticosteroid, Triamcinolone. The antibiotic will help kill any infection and the corticosteroid will aid in bringing down any inflammation and reduce the itch.

    The Uses

    • You can use Nystatin cream between the toes of dogs that suffer from a fungal infection.

A sudden onset of ear infection in a dog may req auire prescription of Nystatin. According to Pet Education it can be used on dogs and cats for infections between the toes and in anal gland infections in dogs. Apply the cream evenly between the toes of the animal for the duration of the prescription. Keep the pet from licking the cream for 15 to 20 minutes to allow for the cream to penetrate the infection and to keep the animal away from possible side effects associated from ingesting the cream.

    Side Effects

    • The side effects of Nystatin are minimal unless the dog has an allergy to it. According to Drugs.com, if a dog experiences unrelatable skin irritation, rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, and/or tongue, get him to a veterinarian as quickly as possible.

    Precautions

    • Nystatin cream is to be used externally. Do not put it in the eyes, nose or mouth. If it gets in a dog's eyes, rinse with cool tap water. Also, tell the vet about other medications the dog is using. Nystatin cream may interact with other medications. If the dog is pregnant or maybe pregnant, tell the vet. It maybe unsafe to use Nystatin cream on a pregnant animal.
