If your puppy suffers from diarrhea, his food may be the culprit. Sometimes a change in diet will help. Although you can treat mild cases at home, when vomiting and lethargy accompany diarrhea--or if the diarrhea doesn't resolve in a day or two--treat it as an emergency and seek the assistance of your veterinarian right away.
Things You'll Need
- balanced puppy food
- cooked White Rice
- boiled Chicken
- probiotic supplement
Instructions
Feed your puppy a bland diet instead of her usual dog food. Offer her a small amount of boiled chicken with rice four times a day. The meat provides protein; and the rice gives her the food energy of carbohydrates.
Continue feeding the puppy this new diet until the puppy begins producing formed stools. During this time, do not feed the puppy treats, dog bones or table scraps.
Ask your veterinarian for advice on using an antidiarrheal medicine such as Pepto Bismol. The vet will tell you the correct dosage based on your puppy's weight.
Add unflavored yogurt to the puppy's food to soothe the digestive system and help control vomiting.
When you take your puppy off the bland diet, reintroduce foods gradually and monitor his bowel movements. Some foods may cause allergic reactions. If you notice diarrhea, replace the offending food.
