Outdoor Plants That Are Poisionous to Dogs

Toxic outdoor plants can have intense gastrointestinal tract effects on dogs if ingested. Toxic plants can cause mouth irritation, vomiting and a variety of other ailments, with symptoms that vary, depending on the plant. Call your veterinarian immediately if your dog shows signs of having ingested a toxic plant.

  1. Aloe

    • Aloe, also known as Aloe Vera, is toxic to dogs if ingested. The plant is stem-less and leaves are green, thick and fleshy. The lower leaf of the plant is used to treat burns and scrapes. The latex, which is located just under the skin of the leaf blade, is the poisonous part of this plant and can cause a purging reaction in dogs by irritating the large intestine, according to the Blankees website. If dogs ingest this plant, it can cause vomiting, depression, tremors and change in urine color.

    Garden Chamomile

    • The volatile oil in Garden Chamomile is toxic to dogs. The plant has long green stems with white flowers and a yellow center. When ingested by dogs, this plant can cause diarrhea, vomiting and anorexia.

    Arrow-Head Vine

    • The Arrow-Head Vine also goes by the common names Nephthysis, Green Gold Nephthysis, African Evergreen and Trileaf Wonder. The leaves are dark green with white mixed in. The leaves of this climbing vine have three points. This plant will cause dogs to have oral irritation, excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing and vomiting.

    Morning Glory

    • Morning Glory grows in vines and bushes flowers that are white to pink to deep blue. This plant can cause upset stomach, anorexia, hallucination and diarrhea.

    Hyacinth

    • Hyacinths are spring-flowering bulbs with leaves that are folded lengthwise. Hyacinths bloom in dense clusters and are highly fragrant. If ingested by a dog, the dog may have intense vomiting, diarrhea, depression and tremors.

    Sago Palm

    • The Sago Palm, also known as the Coontie Palm, is toxic to dogs. This plant is found in tropical rain forests and used in gardens. The plant has dark green foliage and looks like a small tropical palm tree. According to the Earth Clinic website, the nuts and seeds of this plant are the most poisonous, but the entire plant is toxic. If your dog ingests this plant, it could be fatal. The plant can cause liver failure, seizures, increased thirst, vomiting and liver damage.
