Treatments for canine skin disorders vary depending on the cause of the condition. Some skin problems are caused by bacteria, while other issues are genetic. Skin disorders are either temporary or lifelong. Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is a skin disorder that may be genetically linked. Both dogs and humans can suffer from the effects of eczema, or extremely dry skin.

Flea and tick medication
-
Some canine skin problems are caused by fleas and ticks. Infestations cause your dog to scratch and possibly lose patches of fur. Treat your dog with medications designed to kill several types of insects that make their home in your dog's coat.
Olive Oil
-
Olive oil is a natural treatment used to heal basic skin disorders in dogs. This treatment is effective for eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions. The oil has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that soothe rough, dry skin. Rub the oil into your dog's skin and coat to relieve dryness and itching.
Other oils such as coconut and grapeseed are also effective. Neem oil is an herbal oil that is also effective at treating rashes and skin problems in dogs. If your dog suffers from dry skin, brush his coat daily to stimulate his skin to produce natural oils. Avoid bathing your dog too often because excess water and soap contributes to dryness.
Medicated Shampoo
-
Medicated shampoo is used to relieve mange. Mange is a skin condition caused by mites. The mites embed themselves in your dog's skin, resulting in inflammation and extreme itching. Your dog may even lose patches of fur. However, mange is not easy to cure--up to 10 treatments are needed to completely eliminate the mites and their eggs.
Steriod Creams
-
Topical steroid creams are used to treat eczema in dogs. The medication works by reducing inflammation and relieving itch. Additional moisturizing creams may be needed as well. However, steroid creams should be used sparingly because of potential side effects such as thinning of the skin.
