Mange strikes goats, dogs, cats, pigs and even people, under certain situations. It is caused by small mites that dig into skin to suck blood and cause some disfiguring symptoms like dry, flaky skin and hair loss. While vets prescribe miticide washes to kill the mites, these "dips" are highly toxic, and can be dangerous for sensitive or very young animals. Many people choose to use non-toxic home remedies instead.
Things You'll Need
- Warm water
- Borax powder
- 1 percent hydrogen peroxide solution
Instructions
Mix four cups of warm water with two tablespoons of borax powder and 500 cc of one-percent hydrogen peroxide solution. Increase these amounts depending on how large your dog is, or the size of the mange spots you need to treat.
Put your dog in the bathtub or sink and pour the solution over him, concentrating on the mange spots. Allow the solution to air-dry on the dog to kill off the mites; do not rinse or wipe it off.
Repeat the borax solution treatments once a week until the mange spots disappear. If they have not disappeared within two months, consult a vet.
Wash your dog's bedding thoroughly to prevent a re infestation. Mange mites can transfer back to your dog or to other animals through bedding, furniture, carpet and toys.
