Holistic Treatment for Corneal Abrasions in Dogs

If your dog spends a lot of time outdoors, she may be at risk for developing a corneal abrasion. Corneal abrasions are scratches or scrapes near the surface of the eye and can become irritated if left untreated. If your dog's eyes become red or puffy, she may have a corneal abrasion. A vet can prescribe antibiotics to help your dog heal quickly. You can also try holistic methods for treating corneal abrasions, which include boric acid, cod liver oil and herbs.   1. Boric Acid

    • Though the name may sound harsh, boric acid treats corneal abrasions without harming the dogs eyes. You can purchase boric acid from most drugstores. Boric acid inexpensive and will assist healing. Shihtzu Home Remedies by Linda suggests making an eye wash solution for your pet by mixing 1 teaspoon of boric acid into a 1/2 pint of hot water, then cooling the water. Make sure to flush your dogs eyes thoroughly and repeat as necessary. You can repeat this procedure for several days.

    Cod Liver Oil

    • Linda from Shihtzu Home Remedies indicates trying other holistic treatments, such as cod liver oil, for infections. The oil serves as a lubricant and helps remove dirt and sand from the cornea. Additionally, cod liver oil is high in vitamin A and will encourage healing around the eyes. Put one drop of cod liver oil in the upper lid of the eye for best treatment. You can substitute olive oil for cod liver oil, although the olive oil is not as high in vitamin A.

    Herbs

    • Herbs can speed up the healing process if your dog develops a corneal abrasion. Making or buying an herbal tincture and applying it to your dog's eyes promotes recovery and overall health. For example, Goldenseal is a natural remedy that promotes healing of corneal abrasions. Goldenseal is also a natural antibiotic. Another herb known as Eyebright also heals eye problems of many kinds. Working Dog suggests boiling a solution of water, eyebright and Goldenseal. Let it cool and use a small dropper full in your dog's eyes three to four times a day for several days. These herbs may assist in healing other eye problems in your dog, as well.
