Canidae Dog Food & Infertility

The food that a dog or cat eats can greatly affect their health and well being. Choosing the right brand of commercial dog food can be a very important decision because the wrong type of food can cause sickness and increase the possibility of the animal developing a disease in the future. Always read the ingredients before feeding your dog a commercial brand of food.

  1. Canidae Dog Food

    • Canidae manufactures food for both dogs and cats. The company claims that its food is 100 percent natural and uses only high quality meats. Its food also includes whole grain rice and diverse carbohydrates. It offers both dry and canned pet foods, and various specialty recipes, including all life stages such as seniors, weight problems and reduced activity, along with platinum and grain-free foods. Its website claims that their food exceeds the regulations set by AAFCO (Association of American Feed Controls Officials), and is manufactured in facilities that are approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

    Benefits

    • Canidae claims to have many health benefits contained within its pet foods. Some of these benefits include skin and coat conditioners, natural ingredients, viable micro-organisms, essential vitamins and amino acid chelated minerals, according to its website (canidae.com).

    Infertility from Dog Food

    • Ethoxyquin is an ingredient that is permitted to be used in dog foods at a very low level as a food additive. According to shalako.com, some veterinarians and experts believe that ethoxyquin can be a major cause of skin problems and infertility, while others claim that it is the safest preservative to be used in pet food.

    Canidae Consumer Complaints

    • Canidae has received many complaints from consumers claiming that the food made their pets sick. Some of these symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, fever and weight loss. Although there was no proof that Canidae dog food was the cause of the sickness, Canidae did make a statement that it may have been from transitioning the animal to a different kind of food that made them sick.

There are currently numerous class action lawsuits against Canidae pet foods. Canidae changed its formula in the food, which is believed to have caused sickness in animals. Canidae claims that its new formula includes an increase in the levels of meat proteins and quality of complex carbohydrates. There are also claims of acetaminophen being used in Canidae dog food, but Canidae denies these claims.
