Epogen for Kidney Disease in Dogs

Epogen is a medication used to treat anemia associated with kidney failure, and kidney disease in dogs. It comes in a liquid injectable form, and it is administered to your dog by using a needle and syringe. This medication must be prescribed by a veterinarian.

  1. Function

    • Erythropoietin, a naturally occurring hormone that is found in the kidneys, is very important for red blood cell stimulation. If your dog's kidneys are deficient of this hormone, anemia can occur. Epogen is the synthetic form of erythropoietin, and it helps to treat anemia by increasing the levels of erythropoietin in the kidneys.

    Benefits

    • Epogen increases the level of red blood cells in the body by stimulating their production. Also, because Epogen is injected, it is a better option for dogs who have trouble taking tablet medication.

    Precautions

    • Some animals develop a resistance to Epogen, and this causes their anemia to worsen. Accordingly, your dog should be monitored by a veterinarian while receiving this medication. Do not give Epogen to dogs that are pregnant or lactating, dogs that have seizures, or those that have low iron levels. This medication is not recommended for dogs with a mild case of anemia, due to the possible side effects.

    Side Effects

    • Epogen may cause side effects, such as iron depletion, seizures, high blood pressure, ulcers in the mouth, fever and aching joints. Other side effects include pain and inflammation near the injection site. This may be an indication that your dog is building a resistance to the medication. Consult with a veterinarian if you notice the onset of any of these side effects.

    Dosage and Administration

    • Your veterinarian will prescribe the appropriate dose of Epogen for your dog. It will vary based on the severity of the anemia, and your dog's size. Once you receive the medication, make sure you use a new syringe and needle for each injection, and follow the correct administration procedures that are recommended by your vet. Store any used syringes and needles in a container that is puncture resistant, and follow your local regulations for disposal.
