Bad Reactions to Advantage Flea & Tick Control

Pet owners have many products to help them in their fight against fleas and ticks. However, some of these products have been linked to serious adverse reactions in the very animals they are supposed to protect. Advantage Flea Control is one flea control product that has been linked these side effects.   1. What is Advantage?

    • Advantage is a topical flea control product that contains a pesticide called imidacloprid. Imidacloprid works on the nervous system on the insect. It is effective on both adult fleas and larvae, but not ticks. It is applied to back or neck area of the pet once a month and is waterproof.

    Standard Precautions for Advantage

    • Warnings included with Advantage Flea Control state that the product should not be used on puppies under 7 months of age, nor on kittens under 8 months of age. It also advises that you should consult a veterinarian before using on pregnant or nursing animals, aged animals, debilitated animals or those that are on medications. You should also avoid touching your eyes after using the product, and it should not be ingested. Washing your hands after handling the product is recommended.

    Serious Adverse Reactions

    • Some users of Advantage have reported side effects in their pets, such as irritation at the site of application, dazed conditions, seizures, drooling, lethargy, unconsciousness and even death. More incidents of adverse reaction have been reported on smaller dogs. Cats who have had dog products applied have also had adverse reactions.

    Increased Scrutiny by Safety Agency

    • The Environmental Protection Agency is currently reviewing anecdotal reports of these serious reactions connected with the use of "spot-on" pesticides on animals. The agency has received an increasing number of reports of adverse reactions which has caused it to review all flea and tick products.

    • To protect your pet from the possibility of adverse reactions from pesticide products like Advantage, you should consult with your veterinarian before using. If there are any physical conditions that might contraindicate use of the product, or any medications your pet is taking that might cause a problem when using Advantage, your vet may advise you to avoid the product.
