Oils for a Dog's Ear Infection

Ear infections are quite common in canines. Dogs typically run around outside and accumulate dirt and mites in their ears. Certain oils can be used as ear drops to treat infections.

    • Canine ear mites, bacteria and fungi are common causes of ear infections in dogs. A dog may scratch his ear or shake his head due to the irritation. Ear discharge, pain, swelling, redness and odor are also features of an infection.

    Cod Liver and Vitamin E Oil

    • A vitamin E soft gel tablet or a drop of cod liver oil can be beneficial to dogs with middle and inner ear infections. These oils can be used as ear drops and are found at any health food store.

    Olive Oil

    • Dogs with a mild ear infection can be treated with a mixture of garlic and olive oil. Put two cloves of garlic in some olive oil and let it sit for about two weeks. Two to three drops of this liquid, warmed up, should be applied on a daily basis to the dog's ears.

    Almond Oil and Pau d'Arco Herbs

    • According to vetinfo.com, a few drops of almond oil will smother a dog's ear mites. A mineral oil infused with pau d'arco, which is an herb found in the inner bark of a South American tree, will act as a natural antibiotic for a dog's ears. Pau d'arco herbs can also be found at any health food store.

    Neem Oil

    • Flush the dog's ear with a mixture of equal parts of vinegar and water, and then dry with cotton balls. Apply 10 to 20 drops of the following Neem oil cleaner to the infected ear: one ounce of Neem oil, one teaspoon of tea tree oil, a half an ounce of olive oil and a half a teaspoon of eucalyptus oil.
