What Is Clavamox for Dogs?

Dogs with bacterial infections need to be treated with antibiotics. Clavamox is an antibiotic manufactured by the Pfizer corporation. Used to treat both dogs and cats, it is administered orally in the form of a tablet or by liquid. Clavamox is available by prescription only. Speak to a licensed veterinary medical professional to get a prescription or before administering Clavamox to your dog.

  1. Identification

    • Clavamox is a combination of two separate drugs, amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, while clavulanic acid is an enzyme inhibitor. Enzyme inhibitors are necessary for dogs taking antibiotics. The canine body produces an enzyme called beta-lactamase that negates the effects of the antibiotic as stated in the Clinical Textbook for Veterinary Technicians. The enzyme-inhibiting properties of clavulanic acid neutralize this enzyme, allowing the antibiotic to work.

    Function

    • Clavamox is used as treatment for a variety of canine bacterial infections. This drug is routinely prescribed for infections of the respiratory system, urinary tract, skin, soft-tissues and ears, according to Applied Pharmacology for Veterinary Technicians. Clavamox is also used in preventative treatment to reduce the likelihood of bacterial infection in dogs with wounds, abscesses or surgical incisions.

    Dosage

    • Four different dosage sizes exist for Clavamox. The oral tablets are available in 62.5 mg, 125 mg, 250 mg and 375 mg sizes. Clavamox oral drops are only available in 62.5 mg per ml doses. Unless an infection is severe, dogs usually receive 6.25 mg per pound of body weight twice a day.

    Side Effects

    • Common side effects include nausea and diarrhea. This is due in part to the elimination of helpful bacteria in the digestive tract. Other side effects include, but are not limited to, hyperactivity or sleepiness. Some dogs experience an allergic reaction characterized by trouble breathing, rashes, hives, unconsciousness and swelling or itching of the lips, tongue or face. Prolonged or improper use of Clavamox can result in kidney problems, according to the Clinical Veterinary Advisor.

    Warnings

    • Administer Clavamox with a small amount of food to prevent stomach upset. Do not discontinue Clavamox early. Follow your veterinarian's instructions for using Clavamox even if your dog's symptoms lessen or disappear. Symptoms sometimes improve before the bacterial infection is resolved. Seek emergency medical care if your dog experiences an allergic reaction or vomits more than once in a row while using Clavamox. Do not use Clavamox if your dog has a history of allergic reactions to penicillin-based products.
