Natural Remedies for Tape Worms in Dogs

Tapeworms are long worms that can attach to a dog's intestines. Finding segments of tapeworms is how an infection is diagnosed. Segments look like small, white grains of rice or seeds and are usually found on the rear of a dog, in its bowel movements or wherever your dog sleeps. A dog infected with tapeworms can be taken to a veterinarian for treatment, or there are natural remedies that can be tried.

  1. Pumpkin seeds

    • Pumpkin seeds are a natural way to treat tapeworms.

Pumpkin seeds that are fed to a dog to treat a tapeworm infection should be freshly ground up and raw. It is best to grind them right before feeding time, and they should be served in the amount of a quarter of a teaspoon per meal for smaller dogs up to 1 teaspoon for larger dogs.

    Oregon grape

    • The Oregon grape is a shrub, and liquid extract from this shrub potentially can treat tapeworms. Give your dog six drops of the extract per 10 pounds of body weight twice a day for a week.

    Garlic

    • Feeding your dog garlic--either fresh, powdered or in extract form--can help expel tapeworms. Tapeworms do not like the sulfur compounds that are in garlic. An increase in segments from the tapeworm may be visible for a few weeks, but the tapeworms should be gone, or close to it, within a couple of months.

    Wheat germ oil

    • The best way to administer wheat germ oil to a dog is to add up to 1 teaspoon to each meal.
