Worms are parasites that can cause all sorts of problems for your dog, from vomiting to serious diseases, such as anemia, and sometimes death. They usually live in the digestive system, but they occasionally invade major organs, such as the heart. There are a number of ways to get rid of worms. The trick is figuring out if your puppy has worms and what type they are.

Check your puppy's feces or vomit. The most common type of worm, the roundworm, typically can be seen in these. Roundworms are whitish in color and look like pieces of cooked spaghetti. Tapeworms also can be seen in your puppy's feces. They look like small grains of white rice and are commonly spread by fleas.
Look for changes in your puppy's stomach. A bloated, or "pot belly," stomach is a common sign. However, some worms, such as tapeworms, can make your pet's tummy appear skinny.
Check for anemia. Light-pink gums can be a sign of worms.
Observe your dog's behavior. In some cases, your puppy may act tired with droopy eyes, which could be caused by anemia from a worm infestation. You also may notice that your puppy lacks energy or coughs after exercise. This sometimes happens with heart worms, which make it difficult for your pet's heart to pump.
