What Are the Causes of Leg Hair Loss on Dogs?

Hair loss on dogs, also known as alopecia, is the lack of hair on areas where hair should normally be. Hair loss can affect many areas of the body but is common on the legs. There are several different causes of leg hair loss on dogs.

  1. Food Allergies

    • Commercial dog food is the most common cause of allergies in dogs. The most common symptom is scratching of the legs, which can lead to hair loss and bald spots.

    Mange

    • Infections like mange, also known as canine scabies, can contribute to hair loss. Mites invade the skin, resulting in severe itching. One of the most common areas of hair loss is on the front legs, elbows and armpits.

    Flea Bites

    • Fleas, also known as flea allergy dermatitis, are parasites that feed on blood. They cause itching of the skin and often result in hair loss down the back of a dog's leg.

    Ringworm

    • Ringworm is a fungus that lives in dead skin tissues, hair and nails. Hair loss in circular patches can appear. The leg is the area most commonly affected by ringworm.

    Hot Spots

    • According to The Daily Puppy, "Hot spots are open sores, often on your dog's leg. They can be caused by continuously damp fur, allergies or nervous licking." If your dog has a hot spot, you will see no hair on the infected area.
