Eye Ointments for Allergies in Dogs

If your dog has allergies, he probably experiences annoying and painful allergy symptoms frequently. Some of these symptoms include sneezing, hives, excessive itching, swollen ears and irritated eyes. The effects of allergies on your dog's eyes can be the most worrisome, causing impaired vision, inflammation, redness, itching, eye infections and eye disorders. If your dog's eyes are affected the most by allergies, several eye ointments can help relieve his symptoms.

  1. Terramycin

    • Terramycin is an antibiotic ointment that controls bacteria, and it helps with inflammation. When the eyes are affected by allergies, and they are swollen and inflamed, bacteria can accumulate and cause infections. Using this ointment will help remove any bacteria or inflammation caused by allergy-induced infection. Administer it topically to your dog's eyes two to four times daily.

    Neo-Poly-Dex

    • Neo-Poly-Dex helps to eliminate any infections that are initiated by allergies. It is a prescription antibiotic ointment that contains a combination of ingredients. One of those ingredients is dexamethasone, which is a steroid that blocks the production of substances that causes inflammation, thereby controlling swelling and itching around the eyes.

    Optimmune

    • Allergies can cause your dog's eyes to swell. This swelling can interrupt the natural function of the eyes' tear ducts and cause dry eye. Optimmune ointment relieves the dryness because it increases the amount of tear production. It also controls eye inflammation and reduces irritation.

    Application

    • To apply eye ointment, first you should place your hand around your dog's chin and pull upward so that he is looking at you. Use your finger to gently pull down on the lower lid of the eye you are treating. Place your other hand on top of his head. Point the applicator tip away from his eye to prevent injury due to jerking. While holding the tube one inch away from the eye, apply a small line of ointment along the lower lid's inner ridge until you reach the outer area. Make your dog blink, and hold the eye shut. Then massage the eye lid so that the ointment disperses.

    Precautions

    • Applying an ointment may cause your dog to experience blurred vision. To ensure his safety, monitor him in an unobstructed area after an application. Also, your dog's eyes may sting for a short time after ointment application. If it seems that this irritation does not subside, discontinue use of the ointment and consult your veterinarian. Your dogs eyes should start to look better within 48 hours of applying the ointment. Contact your vet if the eyes look the same or get worse.
