Types of Antibiotics for Dogs

Antibiotics are medications intended to eliminate aggressive infections in dogs, humans and other animals. The type of antibiotic chosen is determined by your veterinarian. In most cases vets, like to prescribe a mild antibiotic unless your dog is suffering from a severe infection.

  1. Amoxicillin

    • Amoxicillin is a common antibiotic used for dogs and other animals. This treatment is typically effective if the owner gives the dog the recommended dosage. Antibiotics should be used until the bottle is empty even if your dog gets better. Vets usually give this treatment to dogs with respiratory infections or infections on the skin from superficial wounds. This is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, and side effects are rare.

    Cephalexin

    • Cephalexin is an antibiotic related to penicillin. This medication is used to treat a variety of infections, from respiratory infections to wounds. Veterinarians also give this medicine to dogs with bladder infections. Side effects are rare, and if they do occur, the effects are mild symptoms such as diarrhea. Life threatening reactions have never been reported.

    Chloramphenicol

    • Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic that targets fungi, parasites and bacteria. This treatment is similar to other antibiotics with little to no side effects. If you do notice any side effects, call your vet right away.

    Neomycin

    • Neomycin is a common antibiotic used to treat ear infections and ear mites in dogs. This treatment is in liquid form and administered directly into your dog's ears. If your dog has a ruptured ear drum, all medications should be avoided. Always talk to your vet before giving your dog any type of medication in the ears. Your vet will need to look inside your dogs ear and he will only prescribe this medication if the ears are otherwise healthy.
