Herbs for Vestibular Disorders

Vestibular disorders is a term for the sorts of inner-ear ailments that can cause dizziness, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), nausea, feelings of pressure or fullness in the ear, and even vomiting. Vertigo is a common condition that stems from a vestibular disorder, as is Meniere's disease. Several herbal remedies exist for vestibular disorders, that might help to alleviate some of the symptoms. It is not advised for people to take all of these supplements at once, but instead to give a week to each one to see which will work. (Reference 2)

  1. Vinopectine

    • Vinopectine is an effective herbal treatment for vestibular disorders, especially vertigo. It is extracted from periwinkle and taken as a vitamin pill. Studies have shown that 15 mg of vinopectine a day is enough to reduce signs of vertigo in 77 percent of patients, according to a clinical trial conducted by Japanese researchers Taiji and Kanzaki (Reference 3). However, other sources, such as Dr. Ray Sahelian, recommend as little as 2 or 3 mg a day. Vinopectine may be effective for treating other vestibular disorders, but hard clinical evidence does not yet exist.

    Ginger

    • Another popular herbal remedy for vestibular disorders is ginger root. Ginger root mostly reduces nausea, although it has also been known to help with other symptoms of vertigo. The recommended dosage is one gram of powdered ginger (Reference 3), but it can also be added to your food as a spice.

    Gingko Bilboa

    • Ginkgo bilboa is good at improving microcirculation and blood flow, according to Sahelian. For a long time, it has been highly recommended to help with Meniere's disease, but recent clinical studies have shown that its actual effect are small. However, other studies have shown it to be effective in helping with vertigo. (Reference 3)

    Inhaling Oil

    • To help with symptoms of vertigo, customers can use an oil made from a mixture of jojoba, lavender, peppermint, neroli and anise. Inhaling the oil might help with the feelings of dizziness. (Reference 4)

    Herbal Tablet

    • Another herbal product available is a tablet made from a mixture of a plant called cocculus indicus, native to India, another plant called lobelia, an herb called gelsemium, and another called bryonia alba. These tablets are designed to help relieve dizziness and tinnitus, to balance the fluids of the inner ear, and to improve the overall functioning of the ears. (Reference 5)
