Over the Counter Allergy Medications for Dogs

When a dog has an allergy, it may sneeze, scratch or lick itself. It sometimes has a rash or rubs its face. Often the dog is allergic to pollen, fleas, food, chemicals or fabric. Many veterinarians suggest over the counter (OTC) allergy aids for temporary relief. These simple remedies require no prescription. However, not all dogs respond the same to OTC treatments, so check with a veterinarian for suggestions and dosage.

  1. Benadryl

    • Diphenhydramine hydrochloride, sometimes sold as Benadryl, is an effective antihistamine and sedative often recommended by veterinarians.

    Claritin

    • The loratadine ingredient helps ease itching in many dogs.

    Chlor-Trimeton

    • The chlorpheniramine ingredient is often recommended by veterinarians to relieve itching for allergic dogs.

    Tavist

    • Clemastine, known as Tavist and other names, is used for dermatitis or skin problems.

    Fish Oil Capsules

    • The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil work in the skin to help ease allergy problems in dogs.

    Flaxseed Oil Capsules

    • Fatty acids in flaxseed help lubricate the skin and prevent allergy problems.

    Warning

    • Use only basic allergy medications. Never use pain or decongestant versions such as Tavist-D, Claritin-D or Benadryl Sinus. Added ingredients such as acetaminophen or pseudoephedrine can be harmful to dogs.
