Revolution Flea Control for Dogs

Revolution is a simple-to-use, relatively nontoxic anti-parasitic drug for dogs and puppies. This medication is administered only once a month and protects against a range of parasites. There are some situations where it's not appropriate to use, though. Learning all about this product can help you decide whether it's the right solution for your dog's flea problems.

  1. Application

    • The drug is applied on the skin, once per month. Ideally, you should treat the dog on the same day every month. If you wait longer than 30 days, the medicine becomes less effective. Revolution is available only by prescription, so you'll need to contact your doctor to obtain it. For flea control, apply Revolution at least one month before the start of flea season. Revolution may also be used year-round.

    Function

    • Revolution passes through the skin and enters the bloodstream, protecting against ticks, mites, fleas and their eggs and heartworms. The active ingredient, selamectin, interferes with the nervous systems of parasites. It kills immature heartworms and adult fleas. It also prevents flea eggs from hatching. If you use Revolution for existing flea infestations, it may take some time for all the fleas to disappear, though.

    Time Frame

    • After the first dose, Revolution will kill most fleas within 36 hours. Flea eggs that were laid on your pet before you applied the flea treatment may still hatch. You may still see fleas after the initial 36 hours as new ones hatch. They won't live long, though, if you continue to administer the treatment as directed. Continue applying Revolution to prevent new flea infestations.

    Warning

    • Some dogs have adverse reactions to Revolution. According to the manufacturer, less than 1 percent of dogs suffer digestive upset from the drug. Herding breeds, such as collies, may have a serious reaction to high doses of selamectin--Revolution's active ingredient. If you see your dog staggering, trembling, drooling or suffering from weakness or dilated pupils, contact your vet right away. Never give Revolution orally, or use it in weak, underweight or sick dogs. Puppies under 6 weeks should not use Revolution.

    Considerations

    • Revolution does not remain effective against fleas if you don't administer it regularly. If you have missed a dose, apply the product right away and go back to the usual dosing schedule. Be sure to let your vet know about the missed dose--it could provide a window for re-infestation. Don't apply Revolution to wet dogs, and never massage it into the skin.
