Home Pain Medication for Dogs

Just like humans, dogs can suffer from ailments that may cause pain. The pain can be moderate or severe and will need your immediate attention so that your dog does not suffer. Several medications may be administered to dogs for pain. Some of these medications can only be obtained through a prescription from your vet. If you want to treat your dog's pain without a prescription, home pain medications are available for dogs.

  1. Aspirin

    • Aspirin is an analgesic--a drug used to relieve pain--and it can be purchased over the counter. Aspirin is used to relieve minor human aches and pains, and it can also be used for dogs. It should only be administered to your dog on a short-term basis. The recommended dose is 10 mg per lb., twice a day.

    Tylenol

    • Tylenol is a brand name for a form of acetaminophen, another pain killer. The pediatric liquid form of Tylenol can be given to smaller dogs in the proper dose. The maximum dose for Tylenol is 5 mg per lb., three times a day.

    Ketoprofen

    • Ketoprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It is used for mild to moderate management of pain associated with inflammation. For dogs, the recommended dose of ketoprofen is 1 mg/kg every 24 hours. It is advised to use this drug no more than five days.

    Naproxen

    • Naproxen is also a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Aleve is a popular, name brand version of naproxen that is purchased over the counter. The recommended dose for dogs is 1.1 to 2.2 mg/kg, given once a day or every other day.

    Safety

    • It is recommended that you consult with a vet before giving your dog any home pain medications. This will help you give the right dose for the right amount of time. Also, a vet can help you determine what home pain medications may interact with other drugs your dog may be taking and what side effects might be possible.
