Free Home Remedies to Kill Fleas on Dogs

Fleas are nasty little insects that can spread disease and cause infections and irritation. Getting rid of fleas can be very tricky and expensive. You can create some great home remedies to replace expensive flea medication out of components that most people already have in their homes.

  1. Shampoo

    • Shampooing will kill fleas. You can add a combination of pine, cedar, rosemary, citronella, lavender, juniper and eucalyptus can be added o a pre-made shampoo. Before applying shampoo to the body of the dog, start with creating a ring of shampoo around the neck, building a soapy barrier between the dog's head and the fleas. Apply the shampoo liberally, and wet the dog, creating a thick lather that will kill the fleas. Rinse the dog completely, and repeat if necessary.

    Spray

    • Spraying the dog with a flea killer can sound dangerous, unless that spray is all natural and completely harmless to the dog. One way to create a flea-killing, but dog-healthy spray is to boil lemons in water for a half an hour, allow the water to cool, and then place it in a spray bottle. Spray the dog with the mixture, being sure to get the paws, "armpits" and the outsides of the ears. For a no-cook method, you can get the same results by mixing 50 percent apple cider vinegar to 50 percent water.

    Prevention

    • Feeding a dog a garlic clove with his meal once a day can help to prevent a flea infestation. Feeding a dog a small amount of a sulphur supplement once a week will also prevent fleas. Black walnut hull capsules will also prevent not only fleas, but also mosquitoes and ticks. Use these methods of flea prevention after using one of the home remedies to kill the fleas on the dog.
