The Basset Hound is an overall healthy dog. His intelligent, gentle, loving and easy-going nature make him a great companion and member of the family. As with many breeds, the Basset Hound can be prone to a variety of ailments. Because of their unnaturally long body, long ears and loose skin, Basset Hounds suffer more than their share of skin problems.

Ears
-
Because of their long, floppy ears, Basset Hounds are susceptible to yeast infections in their outer ear canal. With their ears dragging on the ground, soil and moisture can build in their ear canal, causing a yeast or bacterial infection within the ear and skin. This condition is known as "stinky ear syndrome." While treatable, this skin problem can be prevented by regular cleaning with an ear wash.
Paws
-
Basset Hounds have very large paws that can be prone to fungus infections between the digits. This skin infection is really small sacs of pus. It is itchy and the Basset Hound will bite at the infected area to relieve the pain. This can spread the infection. Medication will be needed, but once cleared up, it is important to regularly clean between the digits.
Mouth and Underarms
-
Basset Hounds are constantly prone to yeast infections in and around the folds of their legs and mouth. Moisture collects in these areas, creating a breeding ground for infection. This can be prevented by wiping these areas daily to keep them free of moisture and applying talcum powder to keep the areas dry.
Food Allergies
-
One of the most common skin problems in Basset Hounds is due to food allergies. This type of allergy can cause itchy skin and paws as well as hot spots. While not serious, the skin irritation can cause a great deal of discomfort. A trip to the vet for an allergy test will help eliminate the skin problem.
Inhalant Allergies
-
Basset Hounds can develop an allergic reaction from tree pollen, weeds, grass, dust or mold. This type of allergy can result in itchy skin and feet, hives and excessive shedding. These allergies are seasonal and many vets will prescribe an antihistamine for relief.
