Dogs are naturally curious animals and this can cause them to fall or even be hit by a passing car. Dogs can fracture or break their legs or tails, and these injures can be very serious. By creating a splint for a dog, its owner can ensure that no further injury to the dog's blood vessels, ligaments and muscles is caused while transporting the animal to a veterinarian for proper care.

Instructions
Place a muzzle on the dog's snout. The dog will most likely be in pain which can make even the sweetest dog snap, growl or bite. If no muzzle is available, place tape or a towel around the dog's snout or ask another person to assist you by holding the dog gently on the ground while the splint is applied.
Find an object to use for the splint that is sturdy enough to keep the dog's leg in place. Items such as a piece of cardboard, a rolled up newspaper or magazine will work. For a smaller dog, a pencil or a small ruler can be utilized. The object should be long enough to stretch past the point of injury to a spot on the animal that is not injured in order to add stability.
Place the object on the injured area and wrap with gauze. The gauze should not be wrapped so tightly that it could cut off circulation, or so loose that it could fall off. Secure the gauze with medical tape.
Take your dog to a veterinarian immediately.
