Sarcoptic mange, which is also known as scabies, is a skin condition in dogs caused by a microscopic mite. Scabies causes itching in dogs, making them bite and dig at their skin in an attempt to stop the itch. According to dog trainer and breeder Norma Bennett Woolf on the Dog Owner's Guide website, scabies can be treated at home or at an animal hospital with twice-weekly lime sulfur dips.
Things You'll Need
- Large bucket or bowl
- Lime sulfur concentrate
- Latex gloves
Instructions
Mix 1 gallon of water with 4 oz. 97.8 percent lime sulfur concentrate in a large bucket or bowl.
Put on latex gloves to protect your skin, then pour the lime sulfur dip mixture over the affected animal's skin, avoiding the dog's sensitive areas such as its eyes or nose.
Leave the lime dip on the dog's skin to dry. Do not rinse and do not allow the animal to lick itself or ingest the mixture.
Repeat steps every five days for at least three weeks, which is the life cycle of the mite.
