If you dog ingests a poison or toxic substance such as a pesticide, poisonous plant or medication, you should contact your veterinarian immediately. If you can't reach your vet, call a poison control hotline. Depending on what your pet has swallowed, you may be instructed to induce vomiting. It's best if you have someone to help you control the dog while you administer this first aid. Keep in mind that dogs in distress may bite, so never try to induce vomiting by sticking your fingers down the dog's throat.
Things You'll Need
- Bread, crackers, dog food
- Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
- Bowl or cup
- Syringe
Instructions
Feed your dog a slice of bread, crackers or a little canned dog food if it has been several hours since his last meal. Having something in his stomach to vomit will make the process a little easier.
Pour a little hydrogen peroxide into a bowl or cup. Insert the tip of the syringe (without a needle) into the hydrogen peroxide and pull back the plunger to such up 3 ccs of hydrogen peroxide for every 20 pounds of your dog's body weight.
Insert the tip of the syringe into one side of the dog's mouth and slowly depress the syringe to shoot the hydrogen peroxide into the mouth, aiming for the throat. Have someone help you hold the dog's head still and pointed slightly upward. Some of the hydrogen peroxide may leak out, but if you hold the dog's mouth shut he should swallow most of the solution.
Wait ten minutes. If the dog hasn't vomited by this time, give him a second dose.
Contact your vet if the dog fails to vomit after the second dose.
