There is no rat poison that is safe for pets. If it can kill a rat, it will kill or at least harm your pet if ingested. However, there are alternatives for trapping and killing rats while keeping your pets safe.
-
Poison Danger
-
All commercial rat baits and poisons contain toxic doses of warfarin, or less commonly strychnine. These poisons will cause clotting problems and therefore lead to excessive bleeding in your pet.
Snap Traps
-
Snap traps, also called spring-loaded traps, are available at most hardware stores and can be placed in strategic locations in your yard or garage.
Glue Traps
-
When a rat steps onto a glue trap, the substance is so sticky that the rat is unable to move. Often, they will die from struggling and break their neck, but often can die from dehydration, starvation or predators.
Live Traps
-
Any trap that catches a rat while it is still alive is termed a "live trap." The purpose of these traps is to humanely catch rats and set them free.
Others
-
Other uncommon or less-known traps include electric traps, mouth mousetraps, bucket traps and inert gas traps.
Harm to Pets
-
Contact with any of the aforementioned traps will not fatally harm your pet. At most, your pet may be injured from a snap trap or a glue trap may become stuck to him. Attempt to place your traps strategically to keep your pets away from them.
